as one of American's leading jazz ensembles. Founded in 1965 by distinguished composer and conductor
William Russo, the CJE has remained dedicated throughout its history to preserving the innovative
tradition of American big band jazz music, performing and reinterpreting the classics of big-band
repertoire, while promoting the continuing evolution of the art form by regularly performing and
commissioning contemporary works. As a professional jazz ensemble in residence at Columbia College

Hi Randy Brecker here-just returned to NYC after having performed with the CHICAGO JAZZ ENSEMBLE conducted and led by the great trumpet virtuoso Jon Faddis.
The Ensemble was absolutely World Class and the concert which also featured myself, Lew Soloff, Terell Stafford, and Tom Harrell was a resounding success. Kudos to the band and to Director Jon Faddis in the hot seat conducting a lot of demanding music. The Ensemble covered many, many genres and periods in Jazz history, playing all styles with all out abandon and expertise from beginning to end!
Congratulations!
Randy Brecker

My recent performance with Jon Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble
was an experience I will treasure forever. The musicians in the band
are incredible players as well as supportive and respectful to guest
artist. Jon Faddis as host, moderator and master of ceremonies, did and
outstanding job during the master class and concert to give the guest
artist an opportunity to express who they are. The staff of the Chicago
Jazz Ensemble were very accommodating and extremely organized. Thank
you for your hospitality and great music!
Terell Stafford

Jon Faddis — one of the most celebrated jazz trumpeters in the world — strolls into the band room at Morgan Park High School, but the kids barely react.
Until Faddis puts his horn to his lips. As he rips into Louis Armstrong's classic "West End Blues," complete with high notes that threaten to shatter the window panes of the South Side school, everyone instantly stops horsing around and starts staring at the trumpeter in disbelief.
The sound of Faddis playing Satchmo — his clarion tone surely heard for blocks around — has served its purpose, calling everyone to attention.

Putting Jon Faddis in front of a big band is just where he belongs.
A trumpeter of his skills is a delight to hear on any occasion, but his performance with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble Thursday showed he might be at his best with a big band.
"Happy 90th Birthday, Nat, Diz, Ella and Monk" was a tribute to the work of jazz pioneers Nat "King" Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Thelonious Monk. It provided the band with works such as Monk's "Trinkle Tinkle" and "'Round Midnight" along with Fitzgerald's "A-Tisket, A-Tasket."

Performances of "The Messiah" may be ubiquitous at this time of year, but Handel does not hold a monopoly on the subject.
Nor has classical music cornered the market on issues of faith and redemption.
Jazz works such as John Coltrane's searing "A Love Supreme" and Wynton
Marsalis' ebullient "In This House, On This Morning" have expressed
deeply religious themes in an all-American musical language. Yet few
such compositions have unfolded on so epic a scale as Duke Ellington's
The Sacred Concerts.
